Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper actress and singer. Queen Latifah's performance in music film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award and six more Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, New Jersey. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents divorced when she was just 10 years old. Latifah went to Catholic school and was educated at Newark New Jersey. She attended in the Baptist church. Latifah refers to an Arabic word that means "delicate and gentle". Her cousin gave it to her at the age of eight. Latifah was a 5'10" tall forward on the high school team, was always a tall girl. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah began her career as a beatboxer with the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah joined the original Flavor Unit group, made up of a variety of MCs, as well as the producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka DJ Mark the 45 King, recorded a demo recording of Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. The single caught the eye of Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who was signed by Latifah and released her first single Wrath of My Madness.
